Shooting as an Olympic Sport

The main organisations involved in clay pigeon shooting are the British Shooting Sports Council, the International Shooting Sport Federation, The Clay Pigeon Shooting Association and the National Shooting Centre. The role of these organisations as grassroots clubs are to encourage and govern the sport whilst maintaining the integrity of the sport itself.  

Membership is rising in Clay Pigeon Shooting, especially as it is now recognised as an Olmypic sport. Clay pigeon shooting became part of the Olmypic games in 1896 in Athens, including two types; sporting and Olympic disciplines – double trap and skeet. The main tournaments in the UK are based on a the type of discipline, such as English Sporting, Trap and Skeet. There are a range of disciplines including Automatic Ball trap, Compak Sporting, Double Rise, Double Trap, Down the Line, English Skeet, English Sporting, FITASC Sporting, Handicap by Distance, Helice, Olympic Skeet, Olympic Trap, Sport Trap, Single Barrel, Skeet Double, Super Sporting, or Universal Trench.   

Growing in popularity clay pigeon shooting is practised in private country estates nationally consisting of major international competitions. Players aspire to compete in these events and make it to Olympic level, and the UK’s most famous and successful shooters include the 2024 winners; in the Open category, Richard Faulds MBE, in the Ladies category, Rebecca McKenzie, and in the Juniors category, Joshua Poyser.
